Many of the parents today surely own an electric steam steriliser at home. If you head to any maternity and baby retailers in Singapore, there are many different brands of steam sterilisers. Based on your preference and budget, all steam sterilisers use natural steam to kill up to 99.9% of harmful bacteria over a short time frame.

I believe many of our parents, who are grandparents now, still use the conventional way of sterilising milk bottles. So, what is the conventional way? With the washed milk bottles placed in a pot, hot water is poured over them and cover with a lid to keep the heat trapped. Some grandparents might even boil the milk bottles in a pot.

Electric steam sterilisers work much better than these traditional ways because it doesn’t use a lot of water and natural steam kills bacteria over a short period. Comes in various sizes, some parents would prefer a larger steriliser for milk bottles, while a compact steriliser for breastfeeding accessories.

My Philips AVENT Story

My first electric steam steriliser was by Philips AVENT, SCF274/51. Hold up to six milk bottles and baby accessories such as a pacifier and a teething toy; this electric steam steriliser accompanied Kayden until the age of three. At the age of three, his immune system is stronger.

During our preparation for the arrival of Baby N, I took out the Philips AVENT SCF274/51 from the storeroom. After six years, our first electric steriliser broke down. As our family’s trusted brand, we decided to use their latest 2-in-1 electric steam steriliser, SCF922/01.

What’s New In Philips Avent 2-in-1 Electric Steam Sterilizer SCF922/01?

The most obvious is the compact design. Unlike most steam sterilisers which are round, the SCF922/01 has an ellipse design which makes it look modern in the kitchen. There are three designs which I like about the SCF922/01 beside its size.

Philips AVENT created this steriliser to have a 2-in-1 design, which means that it has both removal milk bottle compartment and basket. The basket is used to hold accessories such as teats, caps and pacifier. Hence, there is no need to search for baby accessories in the steriliser. Everything you need is in the basket.

Cleaning of electric steam sterilisers is necessary to ensure the steam is clean at all time. Besides the above mentions about removal parts, Philips AVENT has redesigned the heating element. Unlike conventional electric steam sterilisers which have hidden heating coils, this open design heating plate makes the detection of limestone easier. To remove the formation of limestone, only add water and vinegar onto the heating plate and switch on the electric steriliser. This process will take ten minutes. Easy right?

If you are shopping for electric steam sterilisers, did you realised that many are designed with a small sliding compartment door or large lid that uses too much space? Philips AVENT knows that parents need to free their hands when taking out milk bottles and prefer a large opening for convenience. With this, Philips AVENT has cleverly designed the lid of SCF922/01 to be almost flat and able to hook onto the edge. In return, this has lead to a large opening for parents.

Final Thoughts

The Philips AVENT electric steam steriliser SCF922/01 has a compact design, yet spacious inside. Steam sterilising is an important process to kill harmful bacteria before entering into your baby, without the use of chemicals.

Natural steam is what kills 99.9% of harmful bacteria in ten minutes. After which it will auto off, keeping the milk bottles and accessories sterile up to 24 hours for an unopened lid.

The Philips AVENT electric steam steriliser SCF922/01 is priced at SGD$89.
