Many of the smartphones today are good enough to challenge with mirrorless or even DSLR cameras. Smartphones are compact, but the fixed focal length is the disadvantage. Despite Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus with two built-in lenses at the back (wide-angle and telephoto), the iOS phone still lacks the flexibility of interchangeable camera lens. Moment is here to bring mobile photography and videography to a whole new level.
I get to know Moment through their Kickstarter program in 2017. Today, Moment has a massive cult following. The number of high-quality lenses the company has created has raised a new generation of mobile photographers and videographers. Here’s why I am excited to be Moment’s cult member.
Moment’s Photo Case And Four New Lenses
On December 2017, Moment has launched a series of new products for Apple’s iPhone X – new protective case and four high-grade optical lenses which cost between US$90 to US$100. Attach directly to this protective casing, these four new optics are a wide angle, a 2x telephoto, a fish-eye, and a macro.
Comes in either black with a canvas or walnut wood backing, this protective case is called the Photo Case. Moment creates a system which enables interchangeable lens for their supported smartphones. In this case, it is the iPhone X.
The Photo Case for iPhone X is a slim protective case where the inside is made of microsuede material from Japan, and the outside is a rubberised body for better grip. This protective casing also allows a wrist strap to be attached to it.
The Moment version 2.0 lenses are made with glass. The company explains that their lenses use “aerospace grade metal” and have gone through a unique gardening process. These new lenses use Moment’s twist and lock for securing the lens to the Photo Case. Moment offers a 1-year warranty on their lenses.
Moment’s New Macro And New Fisheye
In this post, I will be sharing my opinion on Moment’s new macro and new fisheye lens. These two lenses use twist and lock for a more secure attachment. The macro lens enables photographers to shoot as near as one inch from the subject. It also includes a detachable diffuser hood to soften the lighting. The new fisheye allows a 170-degree field of view for mobile photography.
Each lens comes with their own rubber protection caps. I love Moment’s twist and lock system which provides a much quicker interchangeable lens system.
I never got a chance to hands-on the version 1.0 lens. On a personal note, these Moment version 2.0 lens feels premium and solid. Looking through and tilting it at an angle, these new optics seems to be made from high-grade elements.
While Moment encourages their customers to use their app, I hardly use it as the default iPhone camera app is good enough. My Moment experience is positive. Take a photo with a Moment 2.0 lens, post-process it and send it to my Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts. It’s that easy.
Well, the best way to produce high-quality photographs is to ensure you are shooting at a low ISO, have good lighting, cleaned the lens and edit them with a photo editor. I will let you be the judge.
I love the small size and high-quality build of these lenses. The new fisheye lens can capture beautiful lens flare, and the new macro lens can achieve a lot of close-up details. Honestly, I have nothing to complain about Moment 2.0 new optics. Many may find the price steep, but from the quality of images, I feel it is fair.
Moment lenses are available now on their website. The battery case for the iPhone X is still in the prototyping stage, and it is expected to be ready this spring.
