Friday evenings are the best time for every Dad to unwind themselves before they head back to full parenting schedules over the weekends. Last week, I had an evening gathering session with friends at Hospoda Microbrewery. It was great! With the old heritage yet modern flair ambience of the shophouses in Albert Court, it a perfect combination for some Czech beer and light bites with friends.

What Is A Microbrewery?

Unlike large-scale corporate breweries, microbreweries are independently-owned and are of much smaller-scaled breweries. As microbreweries produce small amount of beers, they emphasise a lot on quality, flavour and as well as brewing techniques.

Hospoda Microbrewery

When the two Czech owners of Hospoda Microbrewery decided to sell away their beer business, Darryl Chuan decided to quit his full-time job in the financial industry and focus on brewing Czech beers.

Right inside this small shop, there are two beers poured straight from the large tanks, a Bohemian Pilsner (half a pint $10, full pint $14, jug $28) and Bohemian Dark Lager (half a pint $11, full pint $15, jug $29). The third beer, Bohemian Mix (half a pint $12, full pint $16, jug $30), is a mixture of the equal parts of the other two brews.

Bohemian Pilsner is golden in colour with white head foam. It has a fresh and crispy malt taste with a nice fizzy mouthfeel.

Bohemian Dark Lager is deep brown in colour, which is almost black, with beige head foam. It has a mixture of cocoa, coffee and caramel taste.

Bohemian Mix is a mixture of the Bohemian Pilsner and Bohemian Dark Lager. It has a good balance of taste between the Pilsner and Dark Lager.

Hospoda Microbrewery also sells the Pilsner Urquell ($14), which is transparent golden in colour and much lighter flavour. Pilsner Urquell has a clean and light taste as compared to the above-mentioned beers. I believe the well-balanced and floral taste will be welcome by all ladies.

Pilsner Urquell is also known as the World’s First Pilsner. If you think that the Bohemian Dark Lager has a much higher alcohol content, then you are wrong. All these Czech beers only have an alcohol content of 4%!

Besides handcrafted Czech beers and the original Pilsner Urquell, Hospoda Microbrewery also sells bar food such as the Hospoda Burger with fries ($12) and BBQ Chicken Chop with fries and salad ($12). These bar foods are great to go with Czech Beers! Pivo anyone?
