Due to busy schedules and fast-paced lifestyles, it’s easy for many Singaporeans to dismiss minor aches and pains that could be signs that there’s something wrong with your body.

The thyroid, a small yet mighty gland in our neck, plays a significant role in regulating numerous bodily functions. When it goes off-balance, it sends out signs that should never be ignored.

Here’s a list of ten telltale signs that might be pointing towards potential thyroid issues. Keep these symptoms in mind, so that you can consult your doctor immediately and receive an accurate diagnosis.

Goitre

Goitre is one of the most common signs of a thyroid disorder, usually caused by iodine deficiency. It’s characterised by an enlarged thyroid gland, or by abnormal cell growths that cause lumps to form on the thyroid gland.

Goitres are often painless, although larger ones may cause discomfort. They may also be painful if they’re accompanied by thyroiditis or an inflamed thyroid gland. Also, some small goitres may not be visible but can be accompanied by symptoms like hoarseness and a feeling of tightness in the throat.

Have a goitre promptly examined by a healthcare professional to determine its cause and prevent further complications. You may only need to take medication in some cases, but others may require thyroidectomy to address the problem.

Lingering Fatigue

Do you feel inexplicably drained even if you’re getting enough sleep? It’s possible that you have hypothyroidism. This condition slows down metabolism and can result in lower energy levels and a feeling constant exhaustion. Sleepiness can also be an indication of this thyroid problem.

Weight Woes

Unintentional weight fluctuations can be frustrating and perplexing. They can also be a sign of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. With hyperthyroidism, the thyroid speeds up metabolism, causing unintended weight loss despite a normal or increased appetite. Conversely, hypothyroidism slows metabolism, leading to unexplained weight gain and difficulty shedding those extra pounds, even with a healthy lifestyle.

Fluctuating Body Temperature

Does it seem like you’re always battling with temperature extremes? Hypothyroidism reduces your body’s ability to generate heat and can make you feel constantly chilly, even in a warm room. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism throws your metabolism into overdrive and causes excessive heat production. If you’re always layering clothes even in summer or fanning yourself in winter, consider having your thyroid checked.

Hair and Skin Signals

Many hair and skin issues can be linked to thyroid dysfunction. Thinning hair, brittle hair, and excessive hair fall are common signs of a thyroid hormone imbalance. Hypothyroidism may also cause dry, rough, and flaky skin in patients. Meanwhile, skin problems related to hyperthyroidism include clamminess and excessive sweating.

Mood Swings and Mental Fog

It’s normal to feel all sorts of emotions, especially when you’re overwhelmed or stressed. However, if your feelings or mood frequently seesaws into extreme highs or lows, it’s possible that you have a thyroid disorder. Hypothyroidism often causes feelings of sadness, depression, and anxiety. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism makes patients prone to irritability, restlessness, and fearfulness. Visit your doctor and have your thyroid checked if you experience any of these emotional symptoms.

Abnormal Heart Rhythm

Thyroid hormones affect many bodily functions, and any imbalance can result in negative effects. When it comes to your heartbeat, hyperthyroidism may give you heart palpitations (rapid, irregular heartbeats). Conversely, hypothyroidism may cause a slow heart rate and prevent your organs from receiving ample oxygen.

Gastrointestinal Distress

Stomach issues have many causes, like viral or bacterial infections, food allergies, and even long-term drug use. Thyroid problems may also be a reason for gastrointestinal distress. Frequent diarrhoea is one of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, while constipation and bloating may be an indication of hypothyroidism. If you have already ruled out other causes of the digestive issues, it may be time to check on your thyroid health.

Sleepless Nights

Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep could be a result of thyroid irregularities. Hypothyroidism often leads to excessive sleepiness, while hyperthyroidism usually causes sleep disruptions and leaves you restless or feeling fatigued the next day.

Irregular Menstrual Cycle

Thyroid imbalances can lead to menstrual cycle disruption in women. Specifically, hypothyroidism can cause heavy or irregular periods. Meanwhile, hyperthyroidism may lead to lighter or infrequent menstruation. Sometimes, you may not even have your monthly period at all. If you notice significant changes in your menstrual pattern, consider investigating your thyroid.

The thyroid gland may be small, but it plays a big role in your overall well-being. From mood to menstruation, this butterfly-shaped gland affects your body in many ways. Consult a healthcare professional right away if you experience any of the signs and symptoms mentioned above. Through a thorough medical evaluation, you can determine if you have thyroid problems or other health issues that need to be addressed. Keep in mind that early detection is key to preventing your health conditions from getting worse.

Lastly, remember that you should always listen to your body. If you notice anything unusual, don’t hesitate to visit your doctor.
