Every man’s skincare routine should include sunscreen, no matter the season. Sun exposure can cause skin ageing, cancer, and other harmful effects, so choosing the right sunscreen to protect your skin is essential. This guide will help you understand what to look for when selecting a sunscreen and offer recommendations for the best sunscreens for men.

Why Men Need Sunscreen

It’s essential to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun all year round, not just during the summer months. Even when you’re indoors, ultraviolet (UV) rays can still penetrate through office windows and cause damage.

Exposure to UV rays from the sun can lead to various skin problems, such as skin cancer, sunspots, wrinkles, and leathery skin. To keep your skin healthy, it’s crucial to use sunscreen daily.

Understanding UVA and UVB Rays

When selecting a sunscreen, it is crucial to differentiate between UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays lead to skin ageing and can cause skin cancer, whereas UVB rays cause sunburns and contribute to skin cancer. The most effective sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection, shielding against UVA and UVB rays.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Sunscreen

SPF Rating

To ensure better protection from the sun’s harmful UVB and UVA rays, it’s recommended to use sunscreen with a higher SPF rating. SPF 30, for example, can protect your skin up to 97%. However, it’s important to remember that most people usually apply only one-third of the necessary amount of sunscreen to achieve the indicated SPF level. Therefore, generously using a higher SPF sunscreen can help ensure adequate protection for your skin.

Active Ingredients

To protect your skin from the sun, there are three types of sunscreens: chemical, mineral, and combination. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and turn them into heat, which your body releases to prevent sunburns. They have better water resistance but need to be reapplied more often. Mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to reflect the sun’s rays away from your skin. They might leave a white cast and be harder to apply due to their thicker texture. Combination sunscreens use both chemical and mineral ingredients to provide the desired protection. The type of sunscreen you choose depends on factors like skin sensitivity, activity level, and personal preference.

Formula Type

Different types of sunscreens are available such as creams, lotions, sprays, and sticks. Creams and lotions are known for their longer-lasting coverage and the ability to indicate the amount applied. However, sprays and sticks can also work well if used frequently and generously. Choosing a formula that fits your lifestyle and personal preferences is best.

Water Resistance

Sunscreens can be categorised as either 40 or 80 minutes water-resistant, depending on the manufacturer’s tests. If you intend to participate in water-related activities or exercise, opting for an 80-minute water-resistant sunscreen is best to avoid frequent reapplication.

Skin Type

When choosing a sunscreen, your skin type is an essential factor. If you have dry skin, it’s best to look for sunscreens with moisturising ingredients such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, as some sunscreens can dry. If you have oily skin, it’s recommended to select sunscreens with mattifying properties, which usually contain silicone-based ingredients like dimethicone to absorb excess oil.

Expert Recommendations for Sunscreen Selection

To protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun, dermatologists and skincare experts advise using sunscreens that offer broad-spectrum protection, have an SPF rating of 30 or higher, and are water-resistant. When selecting a sunscreen formula, it’s also important to consider your skin type and personal preferences. Remember to apply it generously and frequently to ensure maximum protection.

Tips for Sunscreen Application

Proper sunscreen application is critical for adequate sun protection. Apply sunscreen as part of your daily skincare routine and reapply every 2-3 hours. Use a generous amount of sunscreen, covering all exposed areas of your skin, and remember often-neglected areas such as the ears, neck, and tops of the feet.

💎 Weekend adventure at Jewel Changi! We had lunch at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh. Of course, ended it all with some waterfall fun, the classic Jewel style.
🥐 Dropped by Moonchild Café at Jalan Besar for brunch and coffee after a late night catching up on GE2025 🗳️. Definitely needed that caffeine fix!

The café has a cosy, laid-back vibe with good coffee, waffles, and bakes — plus it’s dog-friendly, which is always a win. 🐶

🚌 It’s about a 15-minute walk from Bendemeer MRT, but if you’re coming from Tampines, just take Bus 23 — it stops right outside the café.

📍 If you’re looking for a chill spot in the Jalan Besar area with good vibes and brunch, this one’s worth checking out.
