Last Saturday, my family and myself headed for a baking workshop conducted by Pies & Coffee located in Alexandra Retail Centre (ARC). Well-known for their tantalising pies treat and aromatic coffee, this is a brand new concept by the cafe to focus on family bonding time and brings out the creativity in every child. Started back in December 2015, Pie and Cookie is a baking workshop where the whole family can have fun without worrying about the mess after that. The pastry chef will be imparting their unique baking skills to everybody. While waiting for the session to start, we refreshed ourselves by having glasses of iced cold lemon tea and matcha latte. Get ready because we are going to have a “dough rolling good time“.

Time to get creative! Out of the four colours, Kayden started off with his favourite green coloured dough. Flattening and rolling, we were making the base of the pies first. The colours of the dough are provided are spinach green, charcoal black, beetroot red and plain white. We have a lot of fun rolling, cutting and decorating of our handmade colourful pies during the first one hour of our baking lesson. Creatively, we mixed up the coloured doughs for a more layered appearance. Rolling the flatten dough and sprinkling of the flour were Kayden’s responsibilities in making our pies delicious.
In order to make a proper base for the pie, the flatten dough has to be sliced into a squarish shape. After which, it is placed into an aluminum cup. Next, the dough has to be lightly pressed against the aluminum cup, creating a cup shape design. Now, we were ready to scoop the savory fillings into it. The ingredients provided to us were Chicken Cheese, Chicken Mushroom and BBQ Chicken. To seal up the pies, another squarish flatten dough is used to cover the top. Finally, we can do our decorations using the dough cutter. Beautiful.
While waiting for our pies to be completely baked, we got a delicious lunch treat by Pies & Coffee. Served to us were the Beef Cheeks Pie, Curry Chicken Pie with Charcoal Crust, BBQ Chicken with Beetroot Crust, Beef Goulash Pie and Lobster Bisque Baked Rice. Before I forgot, Kayden got his special drink of the day: Choco Cookie Frapp. When chocolate and cookies are made together, you will get a happy kid. We even got ourselves a slice of Teh Tarik cake. What a total sugar rush!
The whole event ended fun and entertaining. We even brought our beautiful creations back home to enjoy. If you are thinking about making a memorable birthday party for your child, you can add Pies & Coffee’s baking workshop into your planning list. Conducted in any of their four outlets in Singapore, the priced for each child is $30 and requires a minimum of eight children to start. Each child will be able to bring back home 6 cookies or 5 mini pies.
