Whenever I have a sore throat, my mother would ask me to mix salt and water together and rinse the solution in my mouth. Just like a mouthwash.

This natural remedy will ease the discomfort on my throat by giving it a numbing sensation. This is what I called a natural pain reliever! Of course, I would visit a doctor if the condition worsens. Today, I am educating my children on this natural bacteria-killing tip to soothe a bad sore throat.

We have lived with pathogens for thousands of years. The recent Wuhan virus, also known as Wuhan Coronavirus, has infected many countries and spreading faster than its cousins, SARS and MERS.

When such life-threatening viruses strike, popular household brands like Dettol, Clorox and 3M will come into our minds. Hand sanitisers, disinfectants and face masks will be wiped off the shelves.

While face masks prevent the spreading of viruses when we cough, sneeze and talk, disinfectant uses chemicals to destroy these microorganisms effectively. But, many of us know that chemicals are not eco-friendly and can cause skin irritations, especially to sensitive skin.

What if, you could use a ‘salt and water’ solution to destroy these nasty germs, viruses, bacteria, algae or mould effectively without hurting our planet? Here are 10 ways of how I would use the ‘salt and water’ solution for disinfection and sanitation.

Disinfecting Toys

My children play with toys every day, ranging from cute soft toys to colourful LEGO bricks. Did you know that germs, bacteria and viruses can live on toys for a long time?

These pathogenic microorganisms can be transmitted when kids share their toys with others. The most common viral infection among children is Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD), causing sores in the mouth and rashes on hands and feet.

Therefore, using ‘salt and water’ solution can help to destroy viruses and prevent kids from falling sick without the use of chemicals.

Antibacterial Spray For Face Masks

The purpose of a face mask is to help limit the spread of germs when we talk, sneeze or cough. Therefore, a face mask acts as a protection layer to prevent other healthy people from falling sick.

Spraying ‘salt and water’ antibacterial spray onto your face mask before disposal can help to destroy the germs and keep our cleaners safe.

Gentle Antiseptic For Cuts And Wounds

Open wounds and cuts are prone to infections. The use of this ‘salt and water’ solution will destroy microorganisms that will cause infections and diseases.

Finally, cover the wound with a band-aid.

Prevention Of Mould And Algae Growth

Diluted chlorine is an excellent way to prevent the growth of mould and algae. Another alternative method is to use ‘salt and water’ solution, which is eco-friendly and prevent our hands from irritations.

Antibacterial Spray On Sofa And Bed

We sit on our sofa and sleep on our bed every day. Bacteria in our body are transmitted onto these surfaces, which cannot be seen by our naked eyes.

What I love to do is to spray ‘salt and water’ solution onto my pillows and place them under direct sunlight. Goodbye bacteria!

Antibacterial Spray On The Toilet Seat

Need to use the public toilet, but you are worried about the germs on the toilet bowl seat? Spray the ‘salt and water’ solution onto a piece of tissue paper, wipe the toilet seat and you are good to go with the flow.

Sanitising Of Utensils And Food Containers

Many people will feel that sanitising utensils is an act of ‘kiasi’. Honestly, it is not. Sanitising is to reduce the number of microorganisms, and this sanitising is performed after cleaning.

It is important to note that all surfaces that will come into contact with food must be cleaned and sanitised. I would prefer to sanitised my utensils than having bad diarrhoea during a holiday trip.

Antibacterial Spray For Face, Body And Hands

We come in contact with pathogen germs every day, on the train when we commute and scrolling through our Instagram feed with our smartphone. Invisible to our eyes, these microorganisms could cause health problems such as food poisoning, flu and HFMD (hand foot and mouth disease).

Apply ‘salt and water’ solution on your face, body and hands to eliminate these pathogenic germs effectively.

Spray On Tissue Paper As Wet Tissue

Today, wet tissues or wet wipes with disinfectants can be easily purchased from supermarkets and pharmacies. With 50 sheets per pack, these antibacterial wipes kill harmful germs with the help of alcohol and other chemicals.

If you have encountered your anti-bacteria wet wipes turned dry wipes after a month, why not spray ‘salt and water’ solutions onto dry tissue paper and use it instantly?

Maintain A Germ-Free Interior For Cars

GRAB, GOJEK and private drivers, I guess you need ‘salt and water’ solution to keep your cars germs-free. No fragrance and kills these microorganisms effectively.

SteriPlant® Sanitising Water

SteriPlant® Sanitising Water is the first-ever water-based 100% natural, non-toxic, non-chemical and alcohol-free sanitising product that disinfects effectively against pathogenic germs such as viruses, bacteria, algae, mould and mildew. Innovated by Swiss, SteriPlant® is the first of its kind a non-poisonous disinfectant.

With 99.8% water and 0.2% salt, SteriPlant® is multipurpose sanitising water that will effectively maintain a clean and healthy environment. Believe it or, SteriPlant® Sanitising Water also disinfects drinking water!

Why Is SteriPlant® Better Than Alcohol Sanitisers?

Ethyl alcohol eliminates bacteria by dissolving the bacteria’s cellular membrane, causing the membrane to fall apart. From my own experience, hand sanitisers with alcohol content dry and causes irritations to my skin.

SteriPlant® Sanitising Water is 100% water-based, alcohol-free, fragrance-free and non-corrosive. This electrolysed ‘salt and water’ solution has a pH neutral level of 6.8 to 7.2, making SteriPlant® Sanitising Water gentle to the skin.

How SteriPlant® Eliminates 99.9% Of Viruses?

A virus is a micro parasite that can only reproduce by infecting a host cell. Without a host cell, a virus is unable to live. An infected host cell will turn negative or bad cell when it is infected by a virus. Here is where a virus outbreak occurs.

Bye-bye germs!
Bye-bye germs!

SteriPlant® Sanitising Water is electrolysed oxidising water with Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) of 850 to 950 millivolts and pH neutral of 6.8 to 7.2. The high ORP could destroy the integrity of the cell membrane of pathogenic germs and leads to rapid death.

This will cause the infected cell to die, and the virus cannot survive without a host cell.

Where to purchase SteriPlant® Sanitising Water?

You can purchase this ‘salt and water’ solution on Lazada and Shopee. Follow SteriPlant® on Instagram @steriplantsg for upcoming roadshows and promotions.

Remember always to keep your hands clean and free of germs.

💎 Weekend adventure at Jewel Changi! We had lunch at Song Fa Bak Kut Teh. Of course, ended it all with some waterfall fun, the classic Jewel style.
🥐 Dropped by Moonchild Café at Jalan Besar for brunch and coffee after a late night catching up on GE2025 🗳️. Definitely needed that caffeine fix!

The café has a cosy, laid-back vibe with good coffee, waffles, and bakes — plus it’s dog-friendly, which is always a win. 🐶

🚌 It’s about a 15-minute walk from Bendemeer MRT, but if you’re coming from Tampines, just take Bus 23 — it stops right outside the café.

📍 If you’re looking for a chill spot in the Jalan Besar area with good vibes and brunch, this one’s worth checking out.
😌 TGIF! I’m taking a break from all the rally heat with some grilled goodness at Sinpopo.
