Most of us do not think about our light bulbs until one flickers out or the electricity bill gives us a shock. But for 407 households living in rental HDB flats along Sin Ming Avenue, that conversation just changed completely. And they did not have to pay a single cent for it.

On 22 March 2026, Signify Singapore, the company behind the Philips lighting brand, rolled out a community relamping initiative in the Bishan area. Working alongside the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council, they went door to door, replacing older bulbs with brand new Philips Ultra Bright LED bulbs, and doing the installation themselves. No fuss, no paperwork, no waiting.
What Is the Signify Community Relamping Initiative
This was not a one-off marketing stunt. Signify has been running community lighting programmes in Singapore for several years. In 2025, they donated over 2,000 Philips LED bulbs to 770 low-income households in Toa Payoh East. Before that, in 2024, they covered 600 residents in Punggol West with more than 1,300 LED bulbs. And in 2023, they provided lighting for a wellness room at Stroke Support Station’s S3@Enabling Village.

The Bishan initiative builds on all of that. It is part of a sustained effort to bring better lighting to households that need it most, not just as a feel-good gesture, but as something with real, practical impact on daily life.
What Makes the Philips Ultra Bright LED Bulbs Different

Every household in this programme received the new Philips Ultra Bright LED bulbs, which have not even launched in retail stores yet. Residents in Bishan are actually among the first people in Singapore to use them at home.
These bulbs deliver up to 40% higher brightness at the same wattage as current models. That means noticeably brighter rooms without any increase in electricity consumption. For families trying to manage monthly utility costs, that matters.

The lifespan is another significant improvement. The new bulbs are designed to last up to 30,000 hours, which is nearly double the 15,000-hour lifespan of the standard Philips LED bulbs currently available. Put simply, you would be replacing this bulb far less often. Over time, that adds up to real savings.
Old bulbs collected from households during the exercise will also be responsibly recycled, which is a small but meaningful detail that reflects Signify’s broader commitment to sustainability.
Why This Matters Beyond the Free Bulb
It is easy to frame this as a corporate give-away and move on, but the implications for the families involved go deeper than a free upgrade.
Better lighting directly affects home safety. Brighter spaces reduce the risk of falls and accidents, particularly for elderly residents living alone. For children doing homework in the evenings, proper lighting is a basic necessity that should not feel like a luxury. And for families living in smaller rental flats, good lighting can genuinely change how a space feels to live in.

Mr Chandra Vaidyanathan, Managing Director of Signify Singapore, put it plainly: the goal is to bring better lighting quality to residents who need it most, while keeping energy consumption low. That is not a complicated idea. It is just a good one, executed consistently.
Signify Singapore has also been recognised as a Champion of Good (2025 to 2028) by the National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre, the highest tier under the Company of Good framework. It is recognition that reflects years of community work, not just one afternoon of volunteering.
