Dear Moms and Dads, before you switch on your tv to view Love, Death & Robots on Netflix, please note that this animated series has full-frontal nudity, simulated sex, war, and violence in nearly every episode.
Love, Death & Robots is a collection of shorts series unlike what we usually see on Netflix. Including 18 mini-series ranging from 10 to 20 minutes, each series is an entirely self-contained story with no direct connection to other episodes. It is this variety in both story and design that has led to some of the series’ highest highs and lowest lows.
With producers including Tim Miller (Deadpool and Thor: The Dark World) and David Fincher (Alien 3, Panic Room and Fight Club), Love, Death & Robots is an R-rated take on the Black Mirror formula, not holding back on the nudity, violence or sex. Amongst all the wickedness is some chilling plots, from darkly bizarre imaginations to the straight-out injustice. All these evoke your emotions while you indulged into these mini-series. Each episode of Love, Death & Robots is created by different teams from different countries.
Unsure which series should you start first? Here are my seven must-watch Love, Death & Robots series that will keep you fully engaged.
Sonnie’s Edge
There is lots of death in “Sonnie’s Edge.” Maybe not in quantity however in close-up detail. Humans take control of the Beasts through making use of bioprocessors. Beasts tear into each other and don’t hold back at all. In the end, two more individuals pass away in equally gruesome ways.
The Witness
After seeing a murder, a lady runs away from the killer through the streets of a surreal city which looks like Hong Kong. The storyline is fascinating, getting you instantly and never releasing up until the last gunshot. “The Witness” has among the very best twists of the entire batch.
Beyond the Aquila Rift
Beyond the Aquila Rift is a love story. A space captain, who awakens from his light-speed induced coma reunites with his old flame (Gretta). As they rekindle their love, they launch into a long sex scene that goes on for about 2 minutes and involves champagne and a great deal of “sound”.
Good Hunting
The child of a Chinese spirit hunter forges a bond with a shape-shifting spirit fox or Huli Jing. There is a powerful, pure friendship between the two characters. When the British got into China, the market (and robotics) they bring wrecks the natural landscape and magic.
Shape Shifters
This story follows a squad of Marines in Afghanistan, led by Decker and his buddy. Both of them are known as “dog soldiers”. The existence of these shape shifting warriors has some dispute among the rest of the soldiers. However, their strong sense of smell and combating abilities soon come in use when they battle against other shapeshifters.
Three Robots
In this animated comedy, a trio of robotics with distinct characters explored a devastated city after an apocalypse. The humour comes from the robots attempting to understand what made the extinction of humans as they step over the decaying corpses.
The Dump
The Dump might be mistaken as a Dreamworks production film as it looks like part of a kids movie. This short film tells the story of an old man who lives in a trash dump and had to make friend with a dump monster. What happened next is somehow predictable.
In summary, Love, Death & Robots appear in the direction which shows the brand-new bold approach in the animation and science-fiction genre. Definitely, Love, Death & Robots proves to animators out there that there is room for adult animation and visual appeals that can gain mainstream media approval.
