The most difficult decisions are made in the supermarket. Just look at the shelves selling milk at you’ll see at least 10 brands hawking a variety of flavours, fat content and fortified blends. But wait – sitting there is organic milk, which has not gone through any fancy processing, and yet is sold at a higher price point. Is it a better choice than non-organic milk?
I’ve been using organic milk for quite a while and have come to discover reasons why it is a better choice.
Organic milk does not contain antibiotics and pesticides
Organic milk production observes very strict guidelines implemented by the European Union. If it is organic milk, it must come from a cow that has not been treated with antibiotics or any reproductive or growth hormones. Moreover, the cow must have been fed on pasture (at least 30 percent of it), and not with pesticide-infused feeds or seeds.
Does this mean that conventional milk is harmful? Absolutely not! Conventional milk production may not be limited by strict guidelines, but cows that produce them need to be cleared of any sickness and antibiotic traces before they get milked out.
The only difference? You’re sure of what you pour into your glass when you buy organic because it is 100% European certified. 100% organic. No shortcuts.
Organic milk has a naturally fresh taste
Even in its purest form, organic milk doesn’t compromise the texture, creaminess, and taste of milk. In fact, you’ll find it refreshingly fresh and the taste will prove that it’s all natural – no added sugar, no artificial flavours. Your kids may not even notice the difference if you’re switching from conventional to organic!
Organic milk is lactose free
Organic milk contains lactase, and not lactose. Lactase helps break down lactose in our bodies and breaks it into two simple sugars: glucose and galactose which are easily digested, thus allowing you to enjoy your glass of milk without the discomforting side-effects of indigestion.
Aside from being lactose free, organic milk is said to contain lower omega-6 than omega-3 fatty acids, due to the strict diet of the cows that produce them. This ratio lowers the risk of heart disease, as well as cancer, inflammation and autoimmune diseases.
Organic milk is affordable
Organic milk is not the cheapest in the market but it’s not the most expensive, too! In fact, you’ll find good organic milk in leading supermarkets and online. Quality and affordability is found in Arla Organic Milk and Arla Organic Low Fat Milk ($3.95 per pack or $7.70 per twin pack). Packed with all the benefits of organic milk, Arla has additional goodness in every pack: it is naturally sweeter than regular milk, naturally gluten-free, complete with nutrients, and supplies calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B12, riboflavin, and other key micronutrients.
