Asia is a continent with an incredibly diverse range of cultures and cuisines. Did you know that there are over 48 countries in Asia? That’s a lot of different flavours to choose from!

When travelling through Asia, it’s important to remember to keep an open mind and palette for some exciting food!  Also, know that each country has its unique way of preparing and eating food. In some places, using your hands when eating is considered impolite. In others, it’s perfectly acceptable (and even encouraged!)

Here are a few tips on how to eat like a local when travelling in Asia:

1. Do your research before you go.

When travelling to a new place, research beforehand is always a good idea. This is especially true when it comes to food. Read up on the local cuisine and find out what dishes are popular in the area you’ll be visiting. If you are interested in visiting a place like Okinawa in Japan, known as the ‘Hawaii of Japan, you should get ready to explore some delicious cuisine and enjoy the scenery of cherry blossoms.

2. Be open to new experiences.

When travelling, it’s important to remember that not everything will be like home. Embrace the new experiences, and don’t be afraid to try something new. Who knows, you might just find your new favourite food! The one thing to appreciate about travel is that you can experience something new at your chosen destination and about yourself.

3. Respect the local customs.

In many Asian cultures, food is a very important part of life. It’s often considered rude to waste food or not finish everything on your plate. When in doubt, just remember to respect the local customs, and you’ll do fine. As the saying goes, ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’ within reason.

4. Be aware of your surroundings.

When travelling, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget to pay attention to your surroundings. But being aware of your surroundings is especially important regarding food. Make sure you know where your food came from and how it was prepared. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and avoid eating anything that looks or smells suspicious.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re unsure about something. The locals will be more than happy to help you out.

6. Enjoy yourself!

Eating is one of the best parts of travelling, so make sure you enjoy it! Relax, take your time, and savour the experience.

Things you should never do when eating in Asia:

1. Don’t use your hands to eat.

In many Asian cultures, using your hands when eating is considered impolite. If you’re unsure what utensils to use, just watch the locals and follow their lead.

2. Don’t make noise when you eat.

In many Asian cultures, it’s considered impolite to make noise when you eat. This includes slurping your soup or chewing with your mouth open.

3. Don’t let food touch your rice.

In many Asian cultures, rice is considered sacred.

4. Don’t eat with your left hand.

In many Asian cultures, the left hand is considered unclean. This includes using it to eat food.

5. Don’t put your chopsticks in your rice.

In many Asian cultures, this is seen as a sign of disrespect.

6. Don’t reach across the table.

In many Asian cultures, reaching across the table is considered impolite. If you need something, just ask the person next to you to pass it on.

7. Don’t put your elbows on the table.

In many Asian cultures, putting your elbows on the table is considered impolite.

8. Don’t eat all of your food.

In many Asian cultures, finishing all of your food is considered impolite. This is because it shows that you were not given enough to eat.

9. Don’t lose your temper.

In many Asian cultures, it’s considered impolite to lose your temper. This includes raising your voice or getting angry.

We hope these tips help you enjoy your next meal in Asia!
