Next year, Kayden will begin his journey to Primary 6, where he will embark on a challenging journey for both of us – the PSLE. For the past six months, I have been looking at the possible secondary schools he could enter based on his Primary 5 score. I plan to push all his subjects 1 point higher, with total points of 18 and below. By doing this, I hope he will have a wider range of options when choosing a secondary school that is right for him.
As a full-time working dad, finding a balance between work and teaching Kayden can be tough. I would often assign homework for him to work on during the evening, and I could only spend time checking his answers over the weekends. If you’re like me and consider yourself a mediocre teacher, it can be harder to figure out what works best for your kids.
After spending the past two years teaching Kayden, I’ve concluded that assessment books are great for him to pen down his workings neatly. However, there are better solutions for busy dads trying to figure out their child’s strengths and weaknesses. I need a product to help me.
How Did I Get to Know Geniebook?
I first discovered Geniebook when browsing through my local bookstore, Popular Bookstore. Since the sales representative explained Geniebook to me, this online learning product for students has been stuck in my mind. I finally decided to visit Geniebook’s website to learn more about the platform and what it had to offer.
In a nutshell, Geniebook is a suite of online learning products comprising AI-personalised worksheets, live online classes, and real-time chat connecting students with teachers to help clarify academic doubts.
Artificial intelligence can help us understand the world in a way that humans never could. I decided to see if they could help me understand Kayden’s learning style, so I decided to try Geniebook. Did it help Kayden and me? Let’s find out!
What I Know About Kayden’s Learning
I know that Kayden is weak in Chinese because we spend most of our time at home communicating in English. I’ve tried many Chinese assessment books and found that Kayden needs help filling in the blanks with the correct Chinese words. This is because he needs more exposure to Chinese words, many of which look similar but have different meanings. With this, his interest in learning Chinese could be higher.
Kayden also struggles with Science. While e-learning apps claim they can help in all subjects, I have found that they aren’t very accurate when grading written answers. Science is not only about understanding concepts and logic. The usage of keywords or terms is also critical in written answers. Kayden’s weakness with Science is the explanation.
When Geniebook offered me a free trial, I had high hopes that this learning product could offer me more insights and interesting findings that I otherwise would not have access to.
My Personal Experience with Geniebook
There are two parts to Geniebook – the online suite of online learning products for students and Geniebook Parent, an app which allows parents to understand, track and get notified of their child’s learning progress. In this article, I will focus on the Geniebook platform.
3 Learning Products: GenieSmart, GenieClass, and GenieAsk
Once Kayden logs into Geniebook, the GenieSmart dashboard is the first thing he sees. On GenieSmart, he can easily find all of his active or completed worksheets. Worksheets are homework assignments that Kayden can create based on the modules of a subject he wants to improve in or that I assign to him.
The “Revision Topics” tab is one of my favourite features on Geniebook. Revision exercises are generated every two weeks based on the questions that Kayden got wrong on previous worksheets. This allows him to focus on the areas where he needs the most help. Also, the AI system refines his learning progress over time.
GenieClass is an online classroom learning product where experienced teachers are virtually present to teach the students. As a dad, I feel this is a huge plus because real teachers teach live-streaming lessons. While I sometimes give Kayden a break from homework and allow him to play his Pokémon game on Nintendo Switch, it’s important to me that he is disciplined enough to watch the recorded sessions on his Geniebook account.
While GenieSmart relies on artificial intelligence and GenieClass is an online classroom, GenieAsk helps Kayden get help fast. When Kayden asks GenieAsk a question about something he is stuck on, a tutor gets assigned to help him understand the exact steps. Kayden enjoys this particular type of learning approach as it is a form of engagement and makes teachers more approachable.
In conclusion, these three learning products (GenieSmart, GenieClass and GenieAsk) are designed to help improve the students’ strengths and weaknesses. They make learning possible anywhere and allow students to get clarification when needed.
Geniebook’s Chinese and Science
Exercises in Geniebook’s Primary 6 Chinese include filling in the blanks, connecting the sentences, Hanyu Pinyin, and identifying the correct meaning of the term. Since Geniebook provides data on how many students got the question correct for every question, it has been immensely helpful in understanding the question’s difficulty and Kayden’s learning capabilities.
Although Geniebook’s Science is categorised into topics similar to subjects like English, Math, and Chinese; one key difference is that Kayden can highlight the text and a small box will pop up to explain the word’s meaning. This allows Kayden to not just learn new words but also test his overall understanding.
Bonus: Geniebook’s Bubble Store
While Kayden thought it would be like homework at first, using Geniebook on his iPad made it much less intimidating and much more fun. He especially started to look forward to it because of the Bubble Store – a rewards system that offers prizes like 7-11 and GrabFood vouchers to motivate kids.
I think it would be cool if Geniebook also had mini-games to assign to kids as a surprise. After they finish their work, it would be nice to reward them with a fun mini-game and motivate them to finish their homework even more. I think this would be a great way to encourage kids to keep using the app and make learning more fun for them.
Is Geniebook Worth It?
A typical Singaporean student’s learning journey usually entails attending school during the weekdays and attending tuition centre classes over the weekends. In addition, they use assessment books and e-learning products during their free time to help them balance their learning phases. These individual journeys are important; they work together to help students in their academic development.
For example, a school teacher is required to teach the curriculum set by the Ministry of Education, but they must focus on more than all 30 students in one class. Assessment books are great written exercises, but they might not always be 100% relevant.
Geniebook is an innovative learning product that helps to bridge the gap between tuition centres (not entirely), assessment books, and e-learning products. Although I would consider Geniebook a 3-in-1 learning product, I will still monitor Kayden’s progress and see to it that he always completes his worksheets on his iPad.
If you’re feeling frustrated because you’re trying to help your child learn and not seeing much progress, Geniebook may be a good supplement to what you’re already doing. It’s especially beneficial for students in P5 and P6. You can easily check your child’s progress using the Geniebook Parent app, which will also help ease your mind.
Accelerate your kids’ learning and equip them with future-ready skills with Geniebook today.
