In an exciting development for Singapore’s educational landscape, StarHub and the National University of Singapore (NUS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to create the country’s first ‘Borderless University’. This initiative will leverage cutting-edge digital infrastructure to provide ultra-fast, uninterrupted, and borderless connectivity, significantly enhancing the university’s capabilities in education, research, and innovation.
Powered by Advanced Technology
The ‘Borderless University’ project, powered by StarHub’s Enterprise 5G and their Cloud Infinity multi-cloud solution, aims to transform the learning experience at NUS. This collaboration between StarHub and NUS Information Technology (NUS IT) will utilize Enterprise 5G technology to enrich teaching and research, facilitating the exchange of expertise and industry knowledge between the two partners.
Benefits of Enterprise 5G
Enterprise 5G offers users ultra-fast, low-latency connections, supporting applications such as virtual and augmented reality, and real-time data analytics. The backbone of this initiative is a private dedicated data network established by StarHub for NUS. This network, combined with eSIM technology, allows users to connect directly to NUS’ private 5G network, providing instant access to the university’s digital assets and the internet without the need for repeated logins.
Enhanced Onboarding and Connectivity
The introduction of eSIM technology streamlines the onboarding process for new users at NUS, eliminating the need for physical SIM cards. Students and staff can easily register and activate their eSIM with a simple QR code scan, enabling immediate connectivity.
Key Advantages of the Collaboration
- Borderless University: Provides uninterrupted connectivity for NUS students and staff throughout Singapore, fostering a mobile and adaptable learning environment.
- Secured Access: Ensures secure network segmentation based on user profiles via a private dedicated 5G network.
- Data Analytics and AI: Utilizes intelligent data from eSIMs to support data-driven decisions for potential innovations in sustainable campus operations and experience optimization.
- Global Connectivity: Offers consistent network connectivity for NUS students and staff traveling abroad, subject to partner network capabilities.
A History of Collaboration
The MOU was signed by Tan Shui-Min, NUS Chief Information Technology Officer, and Tan Kit Yong, Head of Enterprise Business Group, StarHub. Since 2022, StarHub and NUS have collaborated on pioneering initiatives in smart campus and connectivity technology innovation, including the successful rollout of an outdoor Wi-Fi network and a Wi-Fi on the Move solution powered by StarHub’s Enterprise 5G. These projects have seamlessly complemented NUS’ existing indoor network, ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted experience for students and staff across the campus.
