From the Fremantle Markets, we walked to the seaside which leads us to the iconic Esplanade Park, which takes us about 10 minutes of walk. Reaching the Esplanade Park was obvious. First, you will notice the blue sea. Second, the large green grasses with pigeons and sea gulls. Finally, the prominent Ferris Wheel, which provides scenery views of the Fremantle Town and Fishing Harbour.

In the Esplanade Park, there is also a playground with swings for children to play. With the fresh air, cold sea breeze and quiet environment, anyone will sure enjoy the ambience.

We have reached our first destination, the Fremantle Esplanade Park.

Stroll across the Esplanade Park to the west end, there is the popular Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. This scenic deep water harbour has a lively maritime atmosphere of the fishing harbour, fantastic broadwalks to take a slow stroll and plenty of tasty fresh local seafoods to dine. If you want to try to get to the sea, there are also sailing rides available from the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.

As this is a real working harbour all year round, you can catch fresh seafood being unloaded from the fishing boats, ready to be despatch locally or overseas. This is a perfect location when exploring the Fremantle’s West End.

In Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, there are many restaurants like Cicerello’s, Joes Fish Shack and Kailis’ Fish Market. We decided to try Kailis’ Fish Market because on their signboard, it states “Voted the best fish ‘n’ chips”. That sounds yummy.

Putting that yummy phase aside, the Kailis’ Fish Market was founded by ‘G.P Kailis and Sons’ back in the 1928. It is located at the waterfront of the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, with an indoor relax restaurant and outdoor pristine wooden deck. With their knowledge and experiences in the fishing industry, Kailis’ Fish Market was inducted into ‘The Awards Hall of Fame’ by the West Australian Tourism Awards. With all that passion, Kailis’ offers the best seafood available in their industry, giving their diners the best memorable dining experiences.

Having your seafood outdoor is a fantastic experience in Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, but do take note of these nasty seagulls. Never leave your food unattended.

Kailis’s Fish Market offers BBQ service. Just pick the fresh seafood you want and they will barbecue them for you. All served to you on your table hot.

If you just want to try their best fish ‘n’ chips, here’s the ordering counter.

As the fishes are prepared upon ordering, waiting time for grilled fish will takes about 15 minutes. The fish ‘n’ chips will take about 5 minutes.

Grilled fish and chips. Seasoned with only salt and pepper for the grilled fish, the fish has the taste of seafood freshness and goodness.

As for Kailis’ fish ‘n’ chips, the fish is fried until golden and crispy. Just like the grilled fish, the fried fish has the taste of seafood freshness.

Each meal comes with a side of salad – fresh vegetables.

Topped up with a small coleslaw. I don’t really fancy the coleslaw because it is too creamy.

Our selection of BBQ seafood platter which cost us $65 AUD. It was quite expensive but we are paying for the quality of the seafood.

The Kailis’ Fish Market served fresh seafood delights to their customers. Some seafood restaurants will use sauces to enhance the flavor artificially but in Kailis’, the seasonings that I tasted were salt and pepper. This is the real challenge of ingredient freshness. I have not tasted the rest of the fish and chips in other restaurants in Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, but comparing to the fish ‘n’ chips in Singapore, Kailis’ really is the best!
