Getting the kids outdoors and convincing them to be active can be a real struggle for parents. Knowing that it’s going to lead to arguments and drama may be enough to stop you from even trying. So what’s the solution? It may be that you’re not enticing them with the ideal outdoor activities and that you might need to shake things up a bit.

Hiking can be a wonderful activity to do with the kids as people of all skill levels and ages can take part. But before you go all-in on family hiking adventures, we’ve got some useful tips that you can keep in mind. These will ensure it’s an enjoyable and safe outing for all.

Choose the Trail Wisely

The first tip is to be mindful when picking the trail. Just because you can handle a longer trail with plenty of hills and uneven terrain, doesn’t mean the kids can. You want to pick a trail that suits the youngest, most inexperienced in the group so that no one is in over their head. Look for a trail that is geared towards beginners and slowly work your way up from there. Starting easy will also prevent kids from getting discouraged or feeling like they can’t do it.

The Perfect Backpack Is a Must

Every parent knows that traveling around with kids requires you to bring a whole host of equipment with you. The younger they are, the more you seem to need. This means you’ll need a good quality backpack that easily stores all the essentials and is comfortable for you to wear.

There are a few things you’ll need to consider when shopping for a backpack, including the following:

  • Does it fit in your budget?
  • Are the straps padded to make them more comfortable?
  • Does it do a good job of distributing the weight evenly?
  • How big of a backpack do you need?
  • Does it have multiple compartments to help with organization?
  • Is it waterproof – if not, you need a backpack rain cover to prepare for inclement weather
  • Is the material lightweight?
  • How easy is the material to clean?

All of these considerations will ensure you find exactly what you need.

Snacks and Drinks Will Be Needed

To make for a more comfortable and enjoyable hike, you also need to think ahead. There will be a point where the kids are inevitably hungry and thirsty, so you need to pack snacks and drinks. High-protein snacks are a great option and for the beverage, you can’t go wrong with water. Be sure to use insulated reusable water bottles as they will keep it cold for the entire duration of the hike.

Dressing In Layers Is a Safe Bet

As for what to wear on the hike, experts always recommend dressing in layers no matter your age. Layers will ensure you’re prepared for any weather. You can always remove layers and add them back on as needed.

Bring Along Fun Extras

You can make the hike a whole lot more fun and interesting for kids by bringing along some extras. This includes such things as a pair of binoculars, a camera so they can take pictures, a magnifying glass, a map of the trail if you’ve got one, a bird watcher’s guide so they can identify the various species, and containers or boxes so they can collect cool items along the way (rocks, leaves and so forth).

All of these tips will help ensure that you find a new family adventure that everyone can enjoy. Hiking is a wonderful way to experience nature, spend time together and, of course, get a little exercise in.
