So school has started for more than a month and Kayden is now a Primary 4 student. Seeing the rate my kids are growing, I can really feel this saying deeply – “The days are long and the years are short”.
How are things in your household? For me, I am going into the new school year more assured because I have a study buddy for Kayden – Snapask, which Kayden had started using during the December school holidays.
I shared about our experience with this tutor-on-demand app previously here (Can Snapask replace tuition?) and here (Snapask review after 1 week). Quite a number of fellow mummies and daddies reached out to ask me more about the app, so here I have consolidated the 5 common questions I get asked and my answer based on my experience. Here goes:
Top 5 questions about Snapask which parents want to know:
Is Snapask considered too expensive, in comparison to home/private tuition?
I did my calculations and found that the cost of asking one question on Snapask, which does not have any time limit, is about the same or even cheaper than a cup of bubble tea! This is the Snapask Singapore price.
And this is personalized, one-to-one attention from the tutor we are talking about. You can ask your questions anytime and anywhere at your own convenience as well. Comparing it to bubble tea, I guess the value of Snapask is clear. Not to forget, we also save on transport fees from travelling to a tuition center.
PS: Everyone can ask two questions for free on Snapask. You just need to sign up for an account and then complete your profile. You will then be rewarded with 2 free credits, enough to ask two questions.
Who are the Snapask tutors and are they helpful to my child’s request?
Many of the tutors on Snapask are students in top universities; their qualifications are listed on their profiles. I also found this page detailing the process of becoming a Snapask tutor, and was pretty impressed with the professional process. Tutors have to start as trainees before being certified and then depending on their performance, progress to become “Snapask Elite tutor”. Speaking from personal experience, Kayden and my experience with the tutors have been smooth.
How is the quality of the teaching on Snapask app?
Last thing we want is for our kids to be spoon-fed answers and the whole tutoring session to be an exercise in copy and pasting answers. That’s every parents’ nightmare! So far so good. The tutors have all been prompt in their replies and clear and patient in explaining concepts to Kayden.
There is also a feedback mechanism in place. After each tutoring session, students can rate the tutors and top rated tutors will be featured on the home screen. With this feedback mechanism, rogue tutors, if any, would surely be weeded out.
Also, like I shared previously, all the questions asked and the whole chat log with the tutors are recorded in the app. So you can check through the log anytime to be assured about the quality of the tutors’ teaching.
Is the Snapask app stable? Does the app crash easily?
All the good features of the app will be quite useless if the app is unstable and hangs or crashes easily. Not to mention how disruptive it will be to the learning progress. Happy to report that we have not encountered any issues with the app since Kayden started using it during the December school holidays.
Which subject works best for Snapask?
Snapasks supports many subjects like Science, English, Maths and also Physics, Chemistry and Biology for Secondary / JC students. I think it is hard to answer this question because it can be quite subjective. The app supports audio recordings too, so you can communicate with the tutor via audio messages, in case you are wondering what if you have pronunciation questions to ask, for instance.
How does Snapask work?
Snapask app have three main features. They are as follows:
1. “Ask a Question” – quickly get a single question clarified and answered – there is no time limit!
2. “Mini Class” –Discuss and learn complex questions that require more in-depth discussion (30 minutes). This is especially suitable for open-ended questions like essay writing or if you have many questions to ask about a particular topic or concept.
3. Learning resources- Besides the two methods of interaction with tutors above, Snapask also provides value-added learning resources in the form of Courses and Practices. Courses are lessons delivered in video format on key topics and concepts, while Practices are quizzes on key concepts for students to check their understanding.
